How good are the Standells in concerts today?

Rather than tooting our own horn, we thought we would relay what the critics have been saying for the last five years. Believe it or not, these are the first rave reviews the Standells have EVER received. Since 2009, the group has been composed of Larry Tamblyn (co-founder, lead singer, keyboards), John Fleck (original member, bassist), Mark Adrian (co-lead singer & guitarist), and Greg Burnham (drums). We also are appreciative of those who have complemented our new songs, some of which we always include in performances today. We’d love to hear from fans that have been to our recent concerts. We dedicate ourselves to sounding like we did in the 60’s, and then some!

The Standells are proud to announce the release of their new album, scheduled for release soon. We’ll update you with the exact date! Titled “The 60s: The Standells”, it was recorded LIVE at Mayne Stage in Chicago during their USA tour in May, 2014. This will be the 2nd NEWLY RECORDED Standells album release in TWO YEARS. It consists of their classic hits, including “Dirty Water”, “Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White” and “Rari”, plus four new songs. This really captures the rawness and power of the Standells today in concert.

The CD will be priced at between $5.00 - 6.00, and will be sold in Walmart, Best Buy, FYE, Amazon, independent record stores, plus special promotions at non-traditional retail grocery and drug chains, such as: Walgreens, CVS, Albertson’s, Office Depot, Rite Aid, etc., USA only. It will NOT be available for download. You heard it, NO Spotify, NO iTunes, NO Pandora, NO Rhapsody. The album must be purchased the old-fashioned way – at a retailer!

The CD is part of Sony’s Extended Version Series, which is Sony Music’s premiere Rock/Pop series featuring LIVE content. It was started in 2000, and collectively the titles have sold millions of copies. The Extended Version series has grown to feature almost 100 bands/artists, including the Zombies, Monkees, Foreigner, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Jethro Tull, Anthrax, Queensryche, Megadeth, Peter Frampton, Everclear, Barenaked Ladies and more!

Standells Members: Larry Tamblyn (Co-founder, Leader, Keyboards, & Lead Singer),

John Fleck (original member, bass), Mark Adrian(Guitar & Co-lead Singer), Greg Burnham(drums)

A Review of Standells performance at Tiki Oasis

A great article in the LA Beat Magazine, featuring a review of the Standells recent concert at the Tiki Oasis Festival, and interview with Larry.

“Not just playing concerts but still actively recording new songs, the Standells are still thrilling crowds with their music. At the Tiki Oasis, these guys proved they can still rock the crowd.”

Standells "Dirty Water" used in new TV Commercial

Breaking News!
The Standells “Dirty Water” used in new TV ad for Benjamin Moore ‘Fenway Collection’ paints.

The Standells are getting rave concert reviews!!!!

The press has finally taken notice of the Standells knock-out concerts this year. Here are some of their reviews!!!!

Ponderosa Stomp, New Orleans, Louisiana

The Standells impressed me last night even more than they did when they first twisted my head off when I was in 7th grade. Of all the 2013 Ponderosa Stomp lineup they were the most commercially successful (except maybe Chris Montez. More on him later.) Is there anyone around my age who doesn't remember "Dirty Water" or, my favorite, "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White".

All too often when you hear old bands play their old songs from decades past, it's sad and cheesy. But these Standells aren't ready for the casino circuit, and hopefully they never will be. They play like they could start a real riot on Sunset Strip.

Adams Ave. St. Fair San Diego, CA

Legendary garage rockers The Standells, led by original singer-keyboardist Larry Tamblyn, headlined the Adams Avenue Street Fair in San Diego. The Godfathers of Punk Rock didn’t disappoint. They tore it up.

- Steve Smith, Pasadena Star News

The band was solid throughout the show. The hits were reproduced faithfully and with exuberance. The best sounding material was the new stuff as recorded by the current roster. It was nice to hear the hits but it was clear from this show that the Standells are not a band looking to just recreate past glories, they are a band looking to create new ones.

"Bump", the Standells first new album in 46 years is now available on!!!

We've worked really hard to maintain the Standells sound. Stu Robbins of WBAI-FM, New York, said "Bump takes you from the Standells of the '60s to the Standells of today". It has been getting rave reviews from Standells fans. Here are just a few:

Bruce Gardner – “Don’t take this wrong, but you guys sound better now than you did in the ‘60s when you sounded good then!! Love the new stuff! Strong vocals and music. This is a great sound!”

Larry McGrath - Yeah! No disappointments here...this album is the real deal!

Jamie Turner: "Just wanted say congratulations on the new album "BUMP" I bought it off of itunes the other week and have been really enjoying it! You guys still have such a great sound..."

The Standells rock the house down at the Satellite Club in LA

The Standells had their record release party and concert at the Satellite Club, August 9th. The crowd was having so much fun, even the video camera was shaking!!!!

Larry Tamblyn's interview on radio station WORT FM

Some comments regarding Larry's interview this past Saturday on radio station WORT (a PBS station), Madison WI:

Rockin John McDonald·

“It was a lot of fun having Larry Tamblyn on tonight's show. I think I'm starting a new tradition. I'm going to have Larry on every year from now on!! He's a great guy and one helluva musician! The new Standells CD "Bump" kicks butt!

Joanie Baker

“Hi Larry.

I cannot thank you enough for your 'appearance' on the show last night.  The audience raved about it and RJ gained some new listeners!  In fact a couple clad in Harley Davidson gear entered the WORT building after the show, (they did try to get in during the program) raving about the night's show, and then wrote the station a check for $2,000!”

Update on new Standells album!!!!

Update on the release of the Standells new album “Bump”!                                             Cover art by Larry Tamblyn

Turning to "Dirty Water" for comfort.

We are humbled that so many have turned to the Standells “Dirty Water” during their time of grief. This morning, President Obama mentioned the phrase “Boston you’re my home” at least twice during his speech. Also E.J. Dionne Jr. of the Washington Post had so some very touching words.

“Boston is the Standells singing "Dirty Water," now the city's all-purpose sports anthem. It celebrates the Charles River before it was cleaned with a little help from Tip O'Neill and Ted Kennedy. I most associate the song with Red Sox victories at Fenway Park and played it in my car the other night. I started to cry.”

Pasadena Star News article by Steve Smith

In the pantheon of garage rock bands, The Standells are in the holy of holies. Formed in Los Angeles in 1962 by lead singer-keyboardist Larry Tamblyn, the band is best known for three 1966 singles, "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Why Pick On Me" and their biggie, "Dirty Water."

Last year, among the group's handful of concerts was a well-received show at the SXSW festival in Austin. Original and long-time members Tamblyn, drummer Dick Dodd and former Love bassist John Fleckenstein, are still with the group today. The Standells will appear at the 12 th annual Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans, Oct. 4-5, according to the event's website and The Standells Facebook page.

Audience Reviews from the Uptown Nightclub!

Terry Lewis - "As for the Standells - they absolutely blew everyone away with their total professionalism, preparedness, spontaneity and perfect renditions of their songs - new and old - many surprises from the past and excellent new material as well! Their total dedication to their audience and the excitement and enjoyment of this Class Act is undeniable! Larry is right - they obviously had a blast and so did everyone present - they played with such energy and conviction it had to be SEEN to be believed! Fortunately they filmed the performance - it was a Night to Remember and the Uptown was the perfect place for it!!"

Cal Cali -  "Standells RULE!!"

Jen Dunjen -  "Awesome show!!!"

Andrew Trice - "You guys blew the roof off at the Uptown. What a great night to have a crew filming! Next time I see you I'll ask you to autograph this piece of Larry's destroyed keyboard..."

Standells to headline at Monterey Pop Festival

The Standells have just agreed to headline at the Monterey Pop Festival, on September 29th, along with Big Bother and the Holding Company, Barry McGuire, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Sopwith Camel, Sal Valentino of the Beau Brummels, and many many more! If you’ve ever wanted to see the Standells perform, this is the place to do it.

The event will run from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM, with the Standells appearing sometime later in the evening. It’s time to dig up those paisley shirts, mini skirts, and love beads, and re-experience those wonderful days of the past.  There is much more!

The Standells will be appearing on the famous stage where Jimi Hendrix burned his guitar! It has remained untouched since then, and left as a monument to Jimi! There will be arts & craft vendors, memorabilia and poster art, great food from gourmet food trucks, cultural cuisine and even raw oysters on the half shell! The standells will have a booth with tee shirts and other memorabilia, plus we will be signing autographs after our performance.

For those of you who really want to party….

Tickets are $25.00 advance or $35.00 the day of the show!

Standells latest recording

Here is the latest song we've recorded. This is special because it features Standells guitarist Mark Adrian singing lead, and proving what a valuable addition to the group he has been. This video is only available for our friends and fans!

Keep up with the Standells on their official YouTube channel

You can hear samples of some of the Standells latest recordings to be featured on their upcoming GRA records album. The Standells-official YouTube channel also features some of their most recent concerts.

Happy Birthday to Standells bassist John Fleckenstein

John was and is a major contributor to the Standells. He joined the group in 1967, after having been a member of the original Love, with Arther Lee. John is not only an outstanding bassist, but responsible for co-writing such Standells classics and fan favorites as "Riot on Sunset Strip" and "All Fall Down". He's also co-written many of the songs on the new upcoming Standells album. Happy Birthday John!

Standells support Russian punk rock group Pussy Riot

The Standells are known as the originators of garage / punk rock. With it comes a huge obligation to support those who follow in our footsteps. We must defend the rights of artists to speak out in protest, such as the Moscow female punk rock group Pussy Riot did, after performing an anti-Putin song. We join Sting, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and other rock groups in expressing our outrage at their arrest and five month confinement behind bars, without trial in Moscow. To us, it sounds very much like a return of the cold war days of Khrushchev.

Standells at the SXSW!!!!!

Lincoln Journal Star
The Standells, yes, those Standells, have a new record coming out and they did a few songs from it during their Buffalo Billiards set. But the fun came with the garage nuggets “Riot on Sunset Strip,’ “Good Guys Don’t Wear White” and the classic “Dirty Water.”
We're then back on the bus where we manage to get suitably Irish'ed up and gain plenty of green bits from some friendly locals. We then head back to one of our favourite hang outs, Buffalo Billiards for some grub and to see old punks The Standells. For saying they must all be in their sixties, they look good and they're clearly having a blast even though the venue isn't that packed out.

Gee it looked pretty packed to us. They were lined up all the way to the back. Must be weird having a bunch of ‘old men’ having fun on the stage. Did he see Bruce Springstein? This was actually a very good review compared to the one for “Plants & Animals” who played at the stadium.

Sound Vision Magazine

By nightfall, all roads inevitably led back to East Sixth Street, where over the course of the evening's endless club crawling I witnessed the following highlights: ‘60s garage rockers the Standells at Buffalo Billiards snarling their way through their banned-in-Boston classic “Dirty Water” and their banned-everywhere illegal substance-promoting ditty “Try It”

Riot on Sunset Strip at Buffalo Billiards. The Standells playing the "hits," a new song. Soon to come Dirty Water. They sound great. Have played 3 songs from new album. 1 is cover of Lyres Help You Ann.

Standells to appear at the SXSW Festival

The Standells are set to appear at the SXSW Festival in Austin TX on March 17, 2012. The group will be performing some of their classic hits such as "Dirty Water" and "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White", along with the introduction of several news songs from their upcoming album. Click on the link to see the details!

Standells 50th Anniversary

Can you believe? It's been 50 years since the Standells first formed in 1962. I came up with the name while we were stand ing around a booking agent's office, trying to get work. McConkey Artists listened to our plea, and our first gig was that year at the Oasis Club in Hawaii.

2012 will be an amazing year for the Standells. Thanks for being our friends!

Happy Holidays and welcome!

We wish you and yours the happiest of holidays. In 2012, look forward to some major announcements from the Standells!
